In the episode, "American Eugenics, the Immigrant Degenerate, and Systemic Racism (S2, E18)," I share more of the ideology of Eugenics, or the practice of selectively breeding humans to achieve a better race, which has been taught in America since the early 20th century. Is it superior genes that excludes poverty from someone’s experience? Or the ability to afford an education? In the belief that defective genes run in families, which supports that mental illness is hereditary, the status of the immigrant continues to be seen as degenerative as Trump proved in his anti-immigrant rhetoric rousing half the nation.
Claiming only sterilization can eliminate our social problems, The Passing of the Great Race by Madison Grant, led to sterilization of 60,000 immigrants in America, and also inspired Hitler and German Eugenics in WWII. Today people are still being influenced by the history of racism, colonialism and Nazism in scientific publishing—particularly in psychiatric journals, which continues to contribute greatly to the deep-rooted systemic racism in America.
